It’s National Care Leavers Week, so we want to shine a light on the amazing young care leavers that we support here at Concrete.
Our Young Persons Accommodation scheme has been supporting care leavers since 2019.
When young care leavers come to us, they’ve often experienced lots of change and uncertainty in their lives.
But at Concrete, we’re here to break that cycle of uncertainty. Our young people mark their own path, and we’re there to guide them along the way. We’re here to help them take control of their futures and start a new chapter.
Operations Manager Mike Goodwin said: “Rather like constructing a house, you need solid foundations, otherwise it will not be resilient to the elements. We use this analogy to empower young adults.
“We help them to build the skills that they need to help them navigate through life and build those solid foundations. But it is paramount that we to listen to the person that is going to be living in the house whilst we are building those foundations.”
At our Young Persons service, there’s lots of support available, including career help, guidance with budgeting and training opportunities.
But that’s not all. Mike explains why emotional wellbeing support is so crucial for young people who have recently left the care system.
Mike said: “We provide emotional support, which is so vital to young adults who have experienced the pressures of change and uncertainty with multiple temporary homes.
“When you combine this with the transition from childhood to adulthood, which all teenagers experience, it can be a real rollercoaster of mixed emotions.
“A young person’s worries and concerns are always heightened in the early hours of the night, when they feel they have no one to reach out to. When this happens, they always have an experienced member of staff on the other end of the phone.
“Another vital strand of support for our young people is providing practical help about how to run and maintain a home. This includes everything from budgeting and supported shopping visits to accessing training and education opportunities to provide transferrable skills to get them on the employment ladder.”
Thanks to these opportunities, a lot of our young carer leavers enrol onto higher education courses or find full-time employment after working with us.
Mike added: “Often we hear older generations criticising the young, saying they are worried for the future.
“I have had the privilege of working with some fantastic young adults, and I am pleased to say that I feel good about the future.”
