It’s Mental Health Awareness Week so we’re sharing an update from Pointon House; our wellbeing accommodation…

“Our main priority remains the same – supporting customers in as many ways as possible but this has become a bit tricky during lockdown and the coronavirus outbreak. Nevertheless, we have found ways around our new ‘normal’ and our incredible team have gone above and beyond to make sure customers are safe and happy!

One example is our onsite laundry facilities. Usually we have customers who don’t live at Pointon House popping in to use our washing machine which has had to stop. To make sure customers have clean clothes Support Practitioner Lynzi has been collecting clothes and washing them herself. Amazing!

There are so many other amazing examples – staff have made their own PPE and masks for customers who feel unsafe leaving their home, staff have been picking up prescriptions, helping with food shopping and on the other end of the phone from 9pm-9am every night! Nothing is too big or small for any of our Support Practitioners.

Thinking about mental health during lockdown, it was really important we kept Pointon House a  psychologically informed (keeping customers needs at the heart of everything we do) environment during such a stressful time.

Senior Support Practitioner Mariana has been getting Pointon House residents involved in socially-distanced gardening to make sure it stays a beautiful environment to live/work in. Gardening can help to reduce stress and make you feel more energised and empowered!

Food is the key to our hearts’… This is something we believe in and have practiced long before COVID-19. We love our ‘Brunch Fridays’ and group cooking sessions. Although we’ve had to put these on hold, it hasn’t stopped us from getting out and delivering warm food, weekly food donations and homemade VE day cakes to our customers. Even our customers have shown acts of kindness and left food parcels out for their neighbours…#Kindness

Although coronavirus has meant we can’t work in close proximity to each other, including some of us working from home, it has in no way divided us. As a team we make sure we have a morning meeting every day where we can exchange vital information about customers, give words of encouragement to our colleagues and offer emotional/mental support, because after all…we’re all human.

Because we’re all striving to achieve the same goal and as part of Honeycomb Group, some team members have lent their support to other services to ease the pressure COVID-19 has brought. Other team members have increased their working hours to make sure all our customers are looked after and residents within Pointon House still receive support and daily interaction with staff.

We are even looking into a Pointon House Zoom Quiz! We are always looking at ways to stay with the times and now more than ever Zoom is a great way to stay connected which colleagues and customers. Quizzes are a great way to build confidence skills, self esteem, social skills and learning ability. We think it will be great fun getting everyone involved!

Positive affirmations can help us with our confidence and low self esteem. When we are having a bad day, having something to remind us that we are good enough or worth it can make all the difference. This is something we teach our customers week in, week out and have ensured we have continued doing despite having limited contact. One of our colleagues with their son painted and created positive affirmation posters to give to our customers with their food deliveries.

This mental health awareness week – we’re not only concerned about basic necessities, but remembering to go the extra mile to create a smile.”
