Junior Housing Minister Luke Hall, has written to local authorities in England this week asking them to house those sleeping rough to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The Minister has advised that all those living in hostels and night shelters now need alternative accommodation too.
The letter addresses local councils across England stating “It is now imperative that rough sleepers and other vulnerable homeless are supported into appropriate accommodation by the end of the week.”
The letter explains that those sleeping rough or living in overcrowded shelters or hostels, who don’t have the luxury to self-isolate, are at a higher risk of catching coronavirus and potentially passing it on.
This comes shortly after the government announcement to shut down non-essential businesses such as hotels that provide emergency accommodation to over 86,000 households in the UK.
Here at Concrete we have been working tirelessly to meet the governments demand to get rough sleepers off the streets and into accommodation they’ll be safe and able to self-isolate in.
Head of Homelessness, Housing and Complex Needs, Sarah Forshaw, explains:
“We’re working tirelessly alongside Stoke on Trent City Council and partners to make sure everyone now has the option to self-isolate. We’re doing all of this during the most challenging time of this generation, but it won’t stop us. Instead, we’re working flexibly and creatively to provide new solutions.”
“As well as this we’re working hard to re-house customers and continue our ongoing support which we’re committed to continue long after the pandemic is over.
“We’re helping people from all walks of life – helping families of domestic abuse, carers and those with underlying health conditions, who otherwise wouldn’t have anywhere else to go.
“It’s a tough time here at Concrete but we won’t give up. We want to make sure every single person is off the streets and not at risk of Covid-19. That’s why we’re now looking for private landlords and hoteliers to help provide accommodation in Staffordshire and Cheshire.
